How-To Build your Own Hydroponic System for Beginners.
I tried to make this system as cheap as I could and as simple as possible. It was a learning project. I could have used other tools but used only the ones I had on hand.

Q&A: Pruning a Climbing Rose

Question: What’s the proper way to prune a climbing rose?

Answer: Climbing roses produce blooms on new shoots that grow from old wood. A climbing rose can be allowed to reach the height desired before any pruning begins, which means leaving it untouched for 2-3 years. When the rose reaches its desired height, start training it horizontally to encourage production of sideshoots off of the main canes. Most climbers flower well with little pruning besides removal of dead, diseased or weak growth. The main canes only need pruning back to keep it from traveling too far, and laterals (sideshoots) can be lightly pruned back 3 to 6 inches or 3 to 4 buds. After at least three years, you can remove a few of the oldest canes to induce new main cane growth. In this way, the rose will always have a majority of 2 to 3 year old wood from which the flowering laterals grow.

Q&A: Planting Sweet Potatoes

Question: When and how do you plant sweet potatoes?

Answer: Sweet potatoes grow best in the southern states where the days are long, warm and humid. Most sweet potatoes need 90-120 warm days to mature. Sweet potatoes for the garden are usually started by planting slips or prestarted plants that are sold bareroot. They require a warm soil so they are planted in late spring or early summer. To help the soil warm faster you can use a raised bed and cover it with black plastic. To create the perfect environment, build long, wide, 10″ inch high ridges spaced 3 1/3 feet apart. Work in plenty of compost and plant the sweet potato pips 6″ inches deep and 12″ inches apart. Avoid the use of fertilizers high in nitrogen, or you’ll have luxurious tops and very little tuber production.

Q&A: Deer Fencing

Question: How tall a fence do I need to keep deer out of the garden? What’s the best material?

Answer: Deer can and will leap over fences to get at a garden, so you need one at least 8′ high to keep them out. Deer are hesitant to jump over a solid fence because they can’t see what’s on the other side, so if it’s appropriate for your situation, consider a solid fence. If you use chainlink rather than wood, you can lay some fencing flat on the ground around the perimeter. This will discourage deer from getting too close too the fence.

Tip: Have a Sunny Summer

Sow sunflower seeds in the garden for some garden “sunshine.” The giant oil seed types with the large heads are great feed for birds. Smaller-flowered multi-branching varieties make great cut flowers. Cut flower varieties grow from a few feet tall up to six feet with flower colors ranging from burgundy to pale yellow. When choosing a variety for cut flowers, read the description to see if it says “pollenless,” as this means the flowers will last longer and be less messy indoors.

Tip: Purchase Summer Bulbs

Start purchasing summer bulbs, like begonias, dahlias and gladiolas; wait to plant outdoors until after your average last frost date.
